40. Signal exhibitions
The tracks, just like the roads on which cars travel, are
full of signs so that drivers know how fast they should
drive, when they have to stop, if they can leave a
station... That's why trains are so safe.
It is very important that you know that trains always take
priority. When they pass, we all have to stop. Do you know
why? Because they need much more time than cars to stop.
They have to start braking many, many metres earlier.
Therefore, there are two signals on the tracks that indicate
the maximum speed to the train drivers. The first one is
round and warns them when they should start applying the
brake and the next one after that is diamond shaped, this
means they can no longer exceed the indicated speed.
